Overview
Sullivan Creek is the quintessential after-work bouldering spot for the Sonora climbing community. River-polished granite boulders line the banks of Sullivan Creek, offering quick-access problems in a beautiful creekside setting. It's nothing world-class, but it's close, it's fun, and when you've got two hours of daylight left, it's exactly where you want to be.
Getting There
From Sonora, head east on Highway 108 toward Twain Harte. The Sullivan Creek boulders are located along the creek drainage off Highway 108, approximately 20 minutes from downtown Sonora. Park at the pullouts near the creek crossing and walk downstream along informal trails to reach the boulders. The entire approach is flat and takes just a few minutes.
The Climbing
The granite here has been shaped by centuries of water flow, creating smooth, rounded forms that demand strong open-hand grip and good footwork. The rock is polished in places but generally offers enough texture for reliable friction, especially in cooler weather.
Most problems are in the V0-V4 range, with a handful of harder lines reaching V6. The style tends toward slab and vertical faces with sloper topouts, though some steeper creek-cut faces provide more overhung movement. Mantels are a recurring theme — if you want to get good at topping out boulders, Sullivan Creek will teach you.
The boulders are spread along both sides of the creek, with the highest concentration near the parking areas. Many problems are naturally low to the ground with flat landings, making this a pad-friendly zone. A few taller boulders offer more committing highball options for those who want the extra thrill.
The creekside setting is a huge part of the appeal. On warm days, you can dip in the water between burns. The sound of the creek, the shade of the oaks and pines — it's a quality outdoor experience even when the climbing is casual.
Best For
Sullivan Creek is ideal for beginners looking to build a foundation on granite, and for experienced climbers who want a mellow session close to town. The concentration of moderate problems makes it a great teaching spot. It's also perfect for mixing climbing with a general outdoor hangout — bring friends who don't climb and they'll still have a good time by the creek.
Local Beta
- Permits: No permits required. The area is accessible via public land and established pullouts.
- Hazards: The creek can run high during spring snowmelt, potentially making some boulders inaccessible or landings wet and slippery. Poison oak grows along the creek banks — stay aware. Mosquitoes can be persistent in early summer near standing water.
- Amenities: Twain Harte is nearby with basic supplies, restaurants, and coffee. Sonora has full services 20 minutes west.
- Tips: This area shines in spring and fall when temperatures are moderate and the creek is flowing but not flooding. Summer afternoons get hot at this elevation (around 3,500 feet), so morning sessions are better. Bring a brush to clean polished holds — the smooth granite collects grime. One or two pads are sufficient for most problems.
